Srinagar, Nov 02: The authorities on Sunday disclosed that JKLF Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik was booked under PSA for launching Safar-e-Azadi, organising “Muzaffarabad March”, “Pampore March” and “Eidgah March” and being part of Coordination Committee (JKCC), spearheading the present agitation.
Malik was arrested during the intervening night of October 23 and 24 from his Maisuma residence after his return from Sumbal Sonawari, where he addressed anti-election campaign. He was shifted to District jail Amphala Jammu on November 1 and booked under infamous Public Safety Act.
Giving the grounds of JKLF chairman’s detention under PSA, District Magistrate Srinagar said, “Malik under the garb of land row in June 2008 exploited the situation and the real motive behind the agitation was to propagate the secessionism”.
DM said, “Malik played very vital anti-establishment role in organising rallies. He addressed press conference on August 1 and 4 at Ahdoos hotel wherein he gave a programme for continuing the anti-national and secessionist activities. He went on fast-unto-death at Maisuma from August 5 and on August 14 Malik led a group of people towards Ghanta Ghar Lal Chowk and raised pro-freedom slogans”.
The DM further said that Malik is an important member of Coordination Committee formed to supervise and organise the anti-establishment rallies throughout the Valley. “He played a key role in organising the Muzaffarabad March, Pampore March and Eidgah March and other rallies, which resulted in large scale loss of life and property,” he said.
The District Magistrate said that Malik alongwith Jamiat-e-Ahle Hadith president Showket Ahmad Shah launched anti-election campaign from Hajin, Sonawari. “While addressing the people, Malik criticised the government and asked people to boycott the elections. He raised anti-India slogans and challenged the accession of J&K with union of India. Malik also asked the people to rise against the establishment and join the secessionist movement. An FIR No 260/2008 u/s ULA Act 121-A RPC was registered against him in P/S Sumba”, he said.
The DM further said that Malik launched anti-India programme, Safr-e-Azadi in June 2007 during which he addressed number of public rallies in Srinagar, Baramulla and other parts of Kashmir. “He criticised the government and accused it of being responsible for killing of innocent people in the State, thereby spreading hatred against the established government,” he said.
The DM said that FIRS have been registered against Malik in Police station sadder, Maisuma, Kothibagh, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Sheergari, for illegal demonstrations and meetings.
Claiming that his activities are highly pre-judicial to the maintenance of security of the state, DM said, “By invoking normal laws, he might have got the bail and remained at large, which will be a threat to the security of the state”.
He said, “In order to overcome the menace of terrorism and secessionism, a holistic approach is needed wherein preventive detention will be effective tool against the persons having the potential will, commitment and urge to challenge the integrity and sovereignty of the state”.
The DM adds, “Under the compelling circumstances, it became imperative to detain Malik under PSA”.
